Beliefs and Values
We provide a nurturing educational environment, where all students are valued and challenged to achieve their fullest potential. We believe this is best accomplished through an open, collaborative effort using innovative means to achieve success.
Senator Gershaw School Staff Members strive to provide the best education possible while following Alberta Education’s mandate as described in the Program of Studies and Inspiring Education, and within the realities of financial limitation.
Senator Gershaw School provides core programming for over 180 students in Grades 4 through 12 from the surrounding area of Bow Island and Burdett. 60% of the students reside in Bow Island and 40% are bussed from the area. Agriculture industries are the primary sector of employment. In addition to core programs, Senator Gershaw School provides a nine-year Virtual Conference French program, and six-year Career and Technology Programs in the traditional areas of Financial Management, Home Economics, and Industrial Arts. Junior high students from Seven Persons School and Burdett also access the CTS programs. The Bow Island Alternative Program targeting Mennonite high school age and adults began last year. Currently we have over 30 students enrolled. Individual Program Planning is provided for students in need from Grades 4-12. Student achievement has been better than provincial average. Student participation rates have been higher than provincial average. We strive for 100% of students writing Achievement Tests. Greater than 80% of our high school population takes academic stream programs. The students have done very well through quality instruction and parental support. A full six year extracurricular program is also a feature of our school. Red, white and black are the “Gators” colors for all divisions. The community desires and supports the extensive athletic program. Gershaw teams have been a dominant force in leagues and provincials. Student Council is active and plans social activities throughout the school year. These traditionally have included one “Gator Day” per month, pep rallies, fundraisers and charitable activities. Joy of Giving, Caps for Causes and fundraising for other worthwhile causes are all part of their activities. Our students are also active participants in the community. They volunteer time and effort to contribute where needed. (Summer Volleyball and Basketball camp, safety patrol and Children’s Festival) Parents, staff, and students, make up the School Council advisory body. Council advises and is informed on all matters affecting the education of students. In addition, the PAC subcommittee focuses on fundraising activities and provides funding towards a scholarship, uniforms, equipment, etc. The 12.5 staff members of Senator Gershaw School provide the dynamics leading to the success of the students and school. The pupil teacher ratio fluctuates between 13 and 33 to 1. In addition to our powerful core program, staff provide over 4000 hours of extracurricular time in many areas: athletics, drama, yearbook, student council, and clubs.
